The Gunners are reportedly in for Bayern Munich striker Mario Mandzukic who is inevitably leaving the Bundesliga champions this summer.
The 27-year-old centre forward has been involved in a couple of well documented bust ups with manager Pep Guardiola, and his imminent exit was given more substance when he was excluded from the German Cup winning side who edged Borussia Dortmund 2-0 to complete a domestic double.
The striker angered the former Barcelona boss with his attitude during their 4-0 Champions League loss to Real Madrid, with the Daily Mail suggesting Guardiola told him:
Goodbye, and good luck with your next club.
Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge also declared it would not be easy for Mandzukic to remain in Munich with Robert Lewandowski set to join the Bavarians this summer too.
He told FAZ:
If Mario stays here, it won’t be easy for him because a world-class player is coming to us.
The question is whether he wants to face up to his competition or would prefer to go to another club.
We are open and fair and we talk about everything, so nothing is decided.
If he does leave, then his next club better well be Arsenal. The Gunners need a top class striker and Mandzukic fits the bill. He is physically strong and is solid in the air like Olivier Giroud, but offers pace up top which has been sorely missed this season.
The Croatian international has enjoyed a series of successful seasons in Bundesliga, netting 21 goals this season in all competitions this campaign, while he’s managed 18 in his other season with the Bundesliga giants after making a name for himself with Wolfsburg.
Chelsea are also credited with some interest in the player, but with Diego Costa surely a done deal for the third placed, trophyless side it remains to be seen whether they will buy two big money centre forwards.
