Third place has just been given even more importance this season as it has emerged that UEFA are restricting the Premier League to have only four teams present in next years tournament, which means if Chelsea win the Champions League and finish outside the top four The Gunners or Spurs may miss out.
The issue first arose in 2006 when Liverpool won the illustrious European competition, but finished behind Everton in fifth place meaning that England had five teams in 2006/07 Champions League competition.
If Chelsea manage to win the tournament then potentially either Arsenal or Spurs will miss out even if they both manage to top the Blues in the league. A spokesperson insisted there will be only four English representatives for 2012-13 as reported in The Daily Mail:
In the situation that Chelsea win the champions League and Arsenal finish fourth, Arsenal will then play in the Europa League.
It will be an extremely tough task for Chelsea to win the Champions League let alone gain a top four spot in the league. They have to face Portuguese champions Benfica in the quarter-finals before meeting superstars Barcelona and AC Milan in the semi-final. So the likelihood of Chelsea winning the Champions League is pretty slim, but nevertheless the situation underlines how important it is for Arsenal to maintain their fantastic form and gain as many 3-points as possible in the remaining ten matches.
