According to The Sun, German central defender Per Mertesacker is out for approximately a month following an ankle injury he sustained against Sunderland at the weekend.
It has been revealed the German international has flown to Munich to undergo treatment with the German national team doctors on what has been described as damaged ankle ligaments.
The injury comes at a bad time for the gunners with a potential fixture pile-up on the cards and the need for Wenger to rotate his squad to avoid burn-out and fatigue.
If Arsenal cannot avoid a replay of their FA Cup clash this weekend, the FA have ordered that the replay be played the following Tuesday which would cause a fixture build-up for the gunners.
The return of Kieran Gibbs is a welcome boost though, as the injury to Mertesacker means Vermaelen will return to his preferred position in the centre of defence and Arsene will finally have a first-choice left-back in the squad. Hopefully Gibbs can overcome his horrible injury history and have a lengthy spell of match fitness!
