It’s only been a matter of days since the transfer window closed, but that has not stopped the rumours as we were linked with summer moves for a striker and a midfielder yesterday.
Santi Cazorla received some fantastic news as he earned a second consecutive Player of the Month award. The Gunners also received an injury boost from Danny Welbeck who has been declared fit for this weekends North London Derby.
Here is the news round up.
Santi Cazorla named Arsenal Player of the Month… Again!
Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has won the Arsenal Player of the Month award for January.
The Spaniard put in one of his most inspiring displays in a Gunners shirt when he aided our memorable 2-0 win over Manchester City last month, while he also tore Stoke City apart earlier in the New Year. A fully deserved accolade.

His latest man of the match display came against Aston Villa on Sunday where he scored one and set-up two others during a 5-0 rout which meant Cazorla has now provided an incredible 19 assists in the Premier League since the start of January 2013.
The Spanish international has been Arsenal’s stand-out player in recent weeks and won our Player of the Month award for the second consecutive month.
Arsenal face fight with rivals to land 28-year-old star striker
Arsenal and Manchester United have been placed on alert after Jackson Martinez confirmed he’s ready to take the next step in his career at the end of the season. He was strongly linked with a switch to the Premier League last summer but a move failed to materialise. The Colombian stayed at Porto where he has scored 23 goals in 26 appearances so far this campaign.
If Arsenal and Man Utd do make a move for the player then the Gunners are likely to be favourites as the Colombian has previously admitted he’s a boyhood Arsenal fan. However the Gunners already have Danny Welbeck, Alexis Sanchez and Olivier Giroud on the books so unless Wenger is planning on selling one of them, you struggle to see where Martinez would fit in at the Emirates.
Arsenal target reveals Borussia Dortmund summer exit plans
Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s agent has confirmed that his client wants to leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season. He hasn’t exactly lived up to his billing as one of the best attacking midfielders around during his spell at Dortmund, but considering the German side as a whole are hugely underperforming, his drop in form isn’t shambolic and entirely down to himself.
Even though he hasn’t hit the heights he’s capable of at Dortmund, there will be no shortage of interest in the midfielder. However the Gunners are fully stocked in the midfield and there is no particular need of a signing another midfielder unless it’s of the defensive persuasion.
Huge boost as Arsenal forward declared fit for North London derby
Arsenal are ready to welcome striker Danny Welbeck back into the first-team for their visit to White Hart Lane on Saturday. The Englishman hasn’t featured for the Gunners since scoring during a 2-1 win over West Ham on Boxing Day, he picked up a thigh injury at Upton Park. His return will give Arsene Wenger a welcomed selection headache in attack, but Welbeck will have a real fight on his hands to displace Olivier Giroud up front.
The Frenchman has been leading the line brilliantly in recent weeks, but Wenger will be pleased to have a variety of options heading into what will be a vital North London Derby this weekend.
David Ospina hasn’t done enough to be Arsenal’s No.1 claims Arsene Wenger
Arsene Wenger has praised David Ospina for settling into his Arsenal side so quickly, but also warned that he is not his permanent number one goalkeeper just yet. The Colombian has been very impressive after initially suffering from injury problems which hampered his arrival at the Emirates Stadium.
However, since Wojciech Szczesny was caught smoking in the team showers after Arsenal’s New Year’s Day loss to Southampton, Wenger has opted for the South American stopper. He has since repaid this faith with four consecutive clean sheets for the Gunners. It may be too early to say whether Ospina is the real deal and admittedly he is yet to face a real bombardment from opposition but the early signs are good. Szczesny has bucket loads of potential but he needs to realise that talent consistently and eradicate mistakes both on and off the pitch.
Welbeck and (hopefully) Sanchez’s return will be a big boost for Arsenal ahead of the North London derby. On the transfer front it looks like more paper talk than anything concrete or particularly exciting and believable.
Onto the player of the month.. It was more or less expected considering Cazorla has been in some destructive form since the start of New Year. Let’s hope his rich vein of form continues. On the ‘keeper front, can Szczesny displace Ospina? With the Colombian keeping so many clean sheets it will certainly take some doing.
