In today’s news roundup, we have confirmation of the impending apocalypse. Or it certainly feels that way; after the ‘Special One’ Jose Mourinho once again heaped praise upon the current Arsenal squad during his press conference yesterday. Now all we need is fire and brimstone raining from the skies.
In other non-shocking news, Arsenal legend Ray Parlour discusses the potential transfer of Petr Cech and Mesut Ozil is nominated for the Player of the Month. All this and more in today’s news roundup.
Mourinho praises Arsenal squad ahead of London Derby
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has reiterated his admiration regarding the quality of our squad as he prepares to face Arsene Wenger’s men on Sunday.
The Portuguese coach commended the strength and quality of our squad back in February during his much publicised appearance on Sky’s Goals on Sunday. Among many memorable comments, Mourinho questioned why Arsenal weren’t fighting at the top with Chelsea and Manchester City.

- Ex-caretaker boss Freddie Ljungberg reveals why he had to leave Arsenal
This time around, he had this to say:
Their squad is incredible.
Incredible numbers and quality of players, and players for the same position. There are many, many alternatives. The squad is fantastic.
We also have unconfirmed reports that this burst of praise results from Mourinho being afraid to face the flying fists of Wenger this time around, after their physical showdown earlier in the season.
Arsenal are strong favourites after looking at the best Premier League odds and offers and Wenger will hope to finally get the Portugese shaped monkey off his back.
Petr Cech speculation heating up
Ex-Gunner Ray Parlour has weighed in over one of Arsenal’s transfer targets this summer, and claims his former side would be mad not to sign Petr Cech from Chelsea.
We have two very decent options between the sticks at the moment, with David Ospina and Wojciech Szczesny both Premier League quality. However, our Colombian summer signing hasn’t exactly set the league alight. His fine form has coincided with the excellent performances of the team as a whole, and he is rarely seen making spectacular saves. Our Polish keeper may be the more talented of the two, and certainly boasts more potential. He has a mistake or two in him however, and regularly makes rash decisions.
Cech, meanwhile, is not only a top quality shot-stopper, but he is reliable too. He would offer the best of both worlds, and Parlour believes if we can get him for £10 million then we should snap Mourinho’s hand off.
‘Giroud better than Costa’ says ex-Gunner Charlie Nicholas
Ahead of our clash with Chelsea this Sunday, former Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas has revealed that he would select Olivier Giroud over Blues striker Diego Costa if he were to pick a combined eleven.
The Spanish international made a lightning start to his Premier League following his summer move from Atletico Madrid, scoring seven goals in his first four games. But having spent much of the season as the league’s top goalscorer, he now sits one strike behind Harry Kane and Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero. Giroud is now fifth on the list, having scored on 14 occasions even though he spent the first half of the season on the bench.
This is what he had to say:
Up front, on his own, I’d have Olivier Giroud over Diego Costa.
Look at Giroud’s stats, he’s been sensational when he’s been fit this season.
He’s turning into the perfect Premier League striker with his power, touch, heading ability and confidence – he’s really moved up a level this year.
