Former Arsenal manager George Graham earlier this week criticised Andrey Arshavin and labelled the little Russian a flop after his £12m dollar move to the Emirates saying:
Arshavin’s been a poor buy. His enthusiasm doesn’t seem to be there.
Against Marseille, and in the past, he’s looked like he doesn’t want to be there. He’s not been good enough, for me.
The criticism prompted retaliation from current Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger who admits although that the little Russian’s form has been inconsistent his attitude has always been fantastic. He told the official Arsenal website Arsenal.com:
You would not be surprised that I disagree with that [criticism of Arshavin], that is opinion. I think he has been great for us and he will still be great in the coming months.
He is a great player and you have to give him credit for that. He stands up for his performances. I personally respect him highly and I think he’s a great player.
He works through it [poor form] by keeping his focus in training and what he does well. I like Andrey because he has a great attitude. It was a difficult game for him on Wednesday and for all the players who played up front because Marseille defended, they played for a point.
There was not a lot of space for the strikers and as long as you don’t find an opening they will not come out, and that is what happened in the game.
Personally I am on the fence about Arshavin who, while definitely an inconsistent performer, still has the ability to be a game breaker. What do you guys think? Is Arshavin just a flop or does he have more to offer? Feel free to leave a comment below!
