Arsene Wenger’s interest in Karim Benzema is well documented, and we are once again being linked with the French forward. Reports from Spain (via the Daily Star) claim we have been offered the chance to sign the striker in January, but would Wenger still be interested?
Benzema is in the midst of a scandal at the moment, and as the report suggests, has been implicated in a recent blackmail case involving international teammate Mathieu Valbuena.
We are still badly in need of reinforcements in the striking department, but Benzema’s guilt in this instance could have a massive bearing on whether or not Wenger continues to show an interest.
Not only might the manager be less than keen to bring a player with that kind of record to Arsenal, but there’s also his potential punishment to take into account. Benzema could face some serious jail time if found guilty (via the Express), and Wenger is not about to splash huge amounts of money on a player who could spend the next few years behind bars. A suspended sentence is always a possibility, but let’s not get into that now.
Arsenal fans were calling for Benzema’s signing this past summer, and there are no doubt plenty who would still want to see him in North London now. Wenger is very selective about his signings however, and will want to ensure nobody destroys the team cohesion.

There aren’t many better strikers out there at the moment, so Benzema obviously ticks the boxes where quality is concerned, but is that enough? Players who disrupt the team have no place at the club, and the 27-year-old certainly seems capable of doing just that.
There is always the possibility that Benzema will be found innocent, but can we gamble on that and look to bring him to the Emirates? It seems like an awfully big risk.
