Arsenal have reportedly opened negotiations to sign Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli as Arsene Wenger looks to bolster our defensive options, the Express reports.
Romagnoli, 20, is also attracting interest from elsewhere and we ‘ll have to fight off competition from AC Milan if we’re to land the youngster, according to the report.
The Express also suggest that Wenger sees the defender as Per Mertesacker’s long-term replacement with the German defender entering the twilight of his career.
Roma have subsequently placed a £24.4million price on the defender in an attempt to scare off potential suitors, as per the Express.
Arsenal transfer news
Not only is the price quoted above slightly inflated, but it’s difficult to see Wenger adding another option in an area of the pitch we’re fully covered in.

- Ex-Arsenal boss Unai Emery set to become next Newcastle manager
- ‘Unhappy’ Arsenal striker will only stay if one promise is met
Laurent Koscielny, Mertesacker, Gabriel, and Calum Chambers are all fighting for two positions, giving us great strength in depth. Also, our current defenders have all secured their future with us which would make any potential departure a slight shock.
As talented as he may be, we’re not in need of another promising central defender.
