Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has opened talks with Toulouse right-back Serge Aurier, according to reports in the Metro.
The 21 year old has been one of Ligue 1’s standout performers recently attracting attention from a host of top clubs from across Europe.
The report states that Arsene Wenger held talks with the player this week over a potential summer move and negotiations are going smoothly. It further suggets that the French manager sat down with the player’s representatives for two hours to mull over the prospect of a switch to the Emirates.
He is valued at around £10 million and it is believed that Toulouse are resigned to the reality that they may well be unable to keep their star defender for next season. The defender recently admitted his desire to ply his trade in England and with Arsenal seemingly his first choice.
He is a strong and powerful runner and enjoys advancing up the field. He has played much of this domestic season in the centre of defence despite his short frame and the youngster seems every bit a Sagna replacement, but with perhaps a more energetic presence than the ageing Frenchman.
He’s brilliant going forward and is a real handful for opposition full-backs but he’s still very sound defensively. He has scored five goals in 25 league appearances and has provided six assists despite his position. His goals demonstrate he has strong aerial ability in addition to an excellent right-footed shot. He made his debut at just age 16 and does not lack experience at a high level, despite his youth.

Bacary Sagna is looking increasingly likely to leave when his contract runs out this summer. Wenger is desperate to keep hold of the experienced France international, but Aurier looks like he may well be an improvement on the reliable right-back. Although Sagna is consistent, Aurier is an younger option and someone who looks like he could provide long term quality to the club.
Even if Sagna changes his mind and accepts a new contract, Aurier would still be a wise investment for the Gunners, who desperately need to add depth to their squad. He may be exactly the sort of player Arsenal need to add pace to their back line.
