Spain international midfielder Santi Cazorla hailed the team’s performance after the 3-0 victory over Manchester United, revealing that the players just needed to believe in themselves to make it possible (via Arsenal.com).
Cazorla was a major driver in our early attacks, distributing the ball well and dominating the United midfield along with Francis Coquelin and Mesut Özil. When given time and space to work with, Santi is a wizard with the ball; and the relatively slow duo of Michael Carrick and Bastian Schweinsteiger were unable to disrupt his rhythm at all. Even in the second half when we sat back a lot, Cazorla contributed defensively – something he does not always succeed in doing.
Speaking to Arsenal Player, the Spaniard also highlighted the importance of the win and urged the team to carry on performing at this level: “It was very important for us today. Together we played very well. Three points is very important for us and we need to keep at the same level in the next game.
“They have very good players with Carrick, [Juan] Mata and [Wayne] Rooney. We need to play together and in the first half we did very well and this is vital for us.
“We needed to believe after the loss against Olympiacos. We needed to change the mentality and today the team was very compact and focused for the game against a big team. This is the most important thing for the team.”
Now the players travel for a two week international break, after which we have another competitive run of fixtures. We play Bayern Munich and Everton at home this month, before playing the return fixture against the German giants early next month. With our Champions League hopes hanging in the balance, let’s hope the team can produce yesterday’s magic against Pep Guardiola’s side as well.
