It’s a well known fact that Arsenal are desperate for a real anchorman in their midfield this summer. Arteta has been a wonderful servant for us over these past three years, and all Arsenal fans are incredibly grateful to him for his leadership skills and versatility which has seen him to move from his more familiar number ten position to a more of a Makelele role. Since the end of the season, we have been linked with a multitude of players to fill the defensive midfield position, including Morgan Schneiderlin, Javi Martinez and Lars Bender. This seems to be a priority for Wenger this summer, and reports this morning in the Mirror are linking Arsenal with a move for German midfielder Sami Khedira.
The article is linking us with a £15,000,000 swoop for the German, who is currently plying his trade in the Spanish Capital with Real Madrid. He has struggled with Injury this season, picking up a knee problem last November which kept him out of action for most of the season, but was fit enough to start in last nights UEFA Champions League Final, before being substituted in the 59th minute for Isco. Wenger apparently made an enquiry for him in January and is set to revive the interest in the player this summer, who has also represented Stuttgart before.
When he left the Baden-Wurrtemberg based club for the Spanish capital in the summer of 2010, the Sporting Director, Fredi Bobic said:
Sami Khedira is a true leader on the pitch and he personifies everything that Stuttgart stand for. Therefore, it’s not easy to let go of him. However, on the other hand, we couldn’t deny Sami his dream move to Real Madrid. We’d like to wish him all the best at his new club.
Arsenal fans will get a good chance to scout the 27-year-old at the up coming FIFA World Cup in Brazil, as he has been included in the German squad despite struggling with injuries. That gives us an idea of how highly he is rated by Joachim Löw, backing up the impressive quality of the player overall. Khedira is also out of
Squawka offers us an interesting statistical analysis of Khedira’s style of play. He has completed 100 % of his passes, proving his ability to fill Arteta’s main role in the team, to keep the teams play ‘ticking over’ by offering an option to pass to. He is calm in possession and good at recycling the ball when we have possession. He has created 12 chances for his team mates, collecting one assist, which would provide our team with more creativity, so it isn’t possibly to mark one play maker out of the game. His defensive statistics are just as impressive. He has one just below half of his aerial duels, slightly more than Arteta but less than Flamini. As well as that, he has made four blocks, 13 interceptions and 14 clearances. Considering he has only made 13 league appearances, this statistics are incredibly impressive.
Overall, I would be very happy to see Khedira at Arsenal. He has proved himself at the top level of football and would be a key player for us. He reminds me of Flamini during his original spell at Arsenal, willing to do the dirty work and tidy up for the team while other players concentrate on going forward.
