A defender doesn’t seem like a high priority this summer, but that hasn’t stopped the rumour mill. We are apparently closing in on an £11.5m move for AS Monaco’s versatile defender Aymen Abdennour, who has been told he is free to leave the club (via the Express).
The French side have already found his replacement, with Felipe Macedo set for a £1.8m move to the club, the Express reports. Abdennour has consequently been told he can look for a move, with Liverpool and Arsenal likely destinations (via the Express).
Despite injury and illness leaving us a little short at the back (via Arsenal.com) – Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker missing our clash with Liverpool – it seems strange that we would be targeting a defender. We have excellent depth at the back for the first time in a while, and there are other weak areas of the team that should be addressed first.

Abdennour has looked superb for Monaco recently and would be a solid signing, but a striker and a defensive midfielder should be our priorities.
