Arsene Wenger is set to launch a €50m (£35m) bid for Inter Milan forward Mauro Icardi in January, with the Frenchman determined to land the Argentine star despite having a £32m bid already turned down, as reported by The Sun.
The 22-year-old has been excellent for Inter, and is one of most promising forwards in the game at the moment. We are badly in need of attacking reinforcements after another quiet summer in the transfer market, and Icardi could be just what we need.
We currently have Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott as options up front, with Alexis Sanchez also able to play there in a pinch, but another striker is high on our list of priorities. Icardi has an excellent goalscoring record for Inter, and could fit in well at Arsenal.
He’s not the quickest striker – which is something Arsenal fans love in their forwards – but despite his lack of raw pace he’s still a real counter attacking threat. He’s creative with an eye for goal, and his finishing is of the highest order.
He’s scored 27 goals in 48 games for the Serie A side, and has helped them to the top of Serie A this season. This season he’s got a not unimpressive four goals and one assist in 11 appearances, and while that’s nothing outstanding, he could still add something to our side.

He’s been linked with Chelsea and Liverpool recently (via The Sun), and was also being targeted by Manchester United over the summer (via the Express). Louis van Gaal is also in need of a striker, so we could still face competition for his signature.
There are unquestionably better strikers available out there, especially for the hefty fee of €50m. But Icardi is a top prospect, and his best years are definitely ahead of him.
