According to The Daily Mail, Arsenal have again gained interest in Everton defender Phil Jagielka. Although relatively out of the blue, with heavy links already with Christopher Samba and Gary Cahill, it is no surprise that Arsene is pushing for another defender following his admission that Arsenal lack defensive quality.
Regarded as one of the most improved defenders in the 2009/10 season and being tipped to make Capello’s world cup squad before succumbing to a serious knee injury, Jagielka has the potential to significantly strengthen Arsenal’s defensive woes with a number of recent call-ups to the England squad for the Euro 2012 qualifiers supporting this.
Interest in Jagielka was shown in the last summer transfer window with Arsene Wenger reportedly offering upto £18m for him to make a move to the Emirates, a significant fee only to be rejected by the toffees. Although Arsenal is being reported to pursue him yet again, it is also being said that history is set to repeat itself with Everton set on keeping their man regardless of what Wenger offers for his services.
While the signing of Jagielka seems like a long shot, the fact that Arsenal is being linked with a number of proven and successful defenders must still be a good sign for Arsenal fans. The absolute need of added defensive strength, apparent to many Arsenal fans, seems to now be a significant priority for Arsene Wenger and hopefully he has success in signing a couple of these proven defenders in the coming weeks.
