Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has spoken out on their reported interest for Gunners target Gary Cahill and has denied any claims that he will make a move for the England international, despite his aging squad showing the need for fresh blood at the back.
With Chelsea now dropping out of the race to sign the Bolton centre back, Arsenal are thought to be in pole position alongside rivals Tottenham for his signature, but will Wenger look to bolster his already stacked central defence positions?
The Gunners now have Mertesacker, Vermaelen, Koscielny and Djourou that are fully capable central defenders and are full internationals, but if Squillaci is sold in January will this allow for Gunners manager Wenger to purchase Cahill on the cheap with his contract due to expire this coming summer. But the Frenchman has reiterated several times that he is not looking to purchase any new players in January unless something ‘special’ comes up.
Personally I don’t see this happening even if Squillaci is sold as it will prevent the development of the talented youngsters Miquel and Kyle Bartley (currently on loan with Rangers) let alone nudging out Djourou or Koscielny who has become top class this season. The ONLY way I see Cahill heading to the Emirates is if he leaves Bolton for free next summer and Squillaci and Djourou are sold.
