The yo-yo like transfer saga surrounding Juan Mata has surfaced yet again. An interesting rumour has been posted in Spanish newspaper Marca, although amidst recent statements by Valencia President Manuel Llorente that Mata is not for sale, it should be taken with a pinch of salt.
Spanish newspaper Marca has reported that Mata is close to signing for Arsenal in a deal worth €15m. They go on to say that the only thing halting the deal is a late bid from North London rivals Tottenham, who face a similar crisis to Arsenal with the possible exit of key play-maker Luka Modric.
They report that the valuation for Mata has been met by Arsenal, but Tottenham have also played their hand in an attempt to hijack the deal. Juan’s father, who is said to be acting as a representative for the player, is reported to be weighing up both deals.
With mixed messages coming from all corners, including the Valencia President, the yellow submarines manager, Mata himself and Juan’s father, it is anyone’s guess how this transfer saga will pan out.
Tottenham, you could say, would be more determined to land Mata as they have no real replacements for wantaway midfielder Luka Modric, while Arsenal would be the more attractive destination with the ability to also offer Champions Leauge football.
If indeed Arsenal do seal the move for Mata, it would make way for Fabregas to finally make his dream move to Barcelona at no great cost to Arsenal. Mata is a proven world-class player and would easily slip into Fabregas’ role as an attacking midfielder. Although, in saying this, with Valencia President stating that Mata is not for sale at any price only days ago, I can’t say I am holding my breath on this one.
