Arsenal’s lanky centre back Per Mertesacker has spoken out over recent rumours linking him with a move back to the Bundesliga, choosing to commit to the Gunners.
The 28-year-old German international signed from Werder Bremen in August 2011 and has been an important figure in the Arsenal back line since his arrival, becoming a first choice defender under Arsene Wenger this season.
Reports were suggesting the 6ft 6in centre-half may seek a move back to his homeland this summer should Wenger bring in further defensive reinforcements, however he insists he is happy at the Emirates especially because of the regular game time.
Mertesacker told German newspaper Sport-Bild while international duty:
A change is not an issue. Our manager Arsene Wenger gives me absolute confidence, I play every game. I can think of nothing else, but to stay at Arsenal.
The German has had mixed reviews since his arrival, however this season he has flourished. His experience has been valuable and height essential among a relatively short side. The past two matches have brought clean sheets while partnered with Koscielny so the fruitful partnership should continue. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it!
