The Gunners hopes of signing Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila may be hanging by a thread after the 21-year-old was arrested for allegedly punching a 17-year-old man.
The France international is believed to be Wenger’s big-name target this summer after the Arsenal manager had a bid rejected from Rennes last summer. Reports are suggesting Wenger will launch a £17million bid soon in an attempt to lure the combative midfielder to the Emirates prior to the start of Euro 2012 as the competition will likely see the player’s stock riser even higher.
But the news of M’Vila’s arrest could potentially scupper any deal as it further illustrates his ‘bad-boy’ erratic behaviour that also saw the player get into trouble in 2010 when he reportedly hit a restaurant owner.
M’Vila has denied the latest incident involving the 17-year-old, which reportedly took place at his residence in Vern-sur-Seiche, however he was arrested and spent the night in a police cell prior to his release on Monday morning. He consequently missed Rennes’ match against Ajaccio for ‘personal reasons’, which have since been explained by his lawyer Thierry Fillion in L’Equipe:
Yann has acknowledged that it was an inappropriate response but provoked by the betrayal of the trust he gave to this young man
As it stands, no decision has been taken yet by the Rennes prosecutor on this case but the file will be forwarded to him within eight to 10 days.

To be quite frank I don’t really see M’Vila coming to Arsenal. We already have Song, Coquelin and Frimpong who are more than capable of starting for the Gunners as well as Jack Wilshere and Mikel Arteta who are more than equipped to play the defensive role if required. However I suppose the purchase of the France international could potentially allow Song to play a more box-to-box role, but again with Arsenal stacked with most midfield options EXCEPT for the attacking midfielder role I can’t really see Wenger splashing out and breaking Arsenal’s transfer record for a player we don’t necessarily need.
If Song refused a contract extension or was sold this summer then certainly yes bring M’Vila in, but Song has been incredible this season and rarely gets injured (touch-wood) so the money would be better off spent bringing in an attacking midfielder that can fight for a place with Ramsey and Rosicky.
What do you guys think? Should M’Vila be brought in? With the Gunners fully equipped with defensive midfielders I find it hard to see a space for the Frenchman at the Emirates next season and his arrest has done little to warrant Wenger’s interest in the player.
