Although not official, an interesting rumour has appeared in the Daily Mirror regarding the desire of senior players to see the employment of a specialist defensive coach after the consistent torrid performances of the Arsenal back-line.
The current Premier League start is the worst for Arsenal in 58 years and after conceding 14 goals in 4 games, it is clear something needs to change at the back.
The rumour comes amidst recent calls from Arsenal legends Peter Storey and Lee Dixon to employ a specialist defensive coach to get the back-line operating as a solid unit.
Martin Keown, also an Arsenal legend, has pointed out defenders need to learn from their mistakes and also outlined uncertainty at the back when it comes to the basics saying as as example: “As a defender, you drop off if the opposition has lots of time on the ball because they can pick out any pass they want and you need to be in position to cover that.
Arsenal’s defenders are not doing that, as you could see from Jenkinson charging upfield against United – putting himself in a position from which it was impossible to recover”

The article raises a good point I feel and while the players do back Wenger 100%, the desire for a specialist defensive coach is definitely a valid one, especially if being pushed for by three Arsenal legends. Former defender Keown is being touted as a potential candidate and if being frank, the employment of someone of his experience would certainly not see the situation in defence get any worse.
