Jagielka, who has become a regular in Fabio Capello’s England squad, is apparently Wenger’s first choice ahead of Blackburn’s Chris Samba and Bolton’s Gary Cahill, with Skybet placing the English international at 4/7 to leave.
As reported here on friday, the opening offer of £10m – £2m less than last year– was rejected out of hand, but the Gunners are rumoured to be back once Everton boss David Moyes is back behind his training ground desk on Tuesday, following the club’s pre-season trip to the USA. Moyes – who must sell before he can buy – it is believed that he will allow the 28-year-old to leave if Arsenal offer around £17m.
Will Wenger actually fork out £17m, when he wouldn’t pay around that price for Gary Cahill who is younger and taller? Perhaps Wenger is favouring experience (for once) over youth and ‘potential’. So who should Wenger choose? Jagielka and Cahill both have decent experience, however Jagielka takes the cake on international experience with more appearances and is favoured more by Capello. Lets not forget Chris Samba though, who also is extremely able to succeed at Arsenal and he comes at a better price than the two Englishmen and is 2inches taller than Cahill.
If Wenger gets either of these three men, I’ll be a happy man, however if push comes to shove I think Cahill has the potential to become the ‘next Tony Adams’ for the Gunners.
