Most of the recent Arsenal transfer rumours have been surrounding the striker position, but we are still badly in need of reinforcements in defensive midfield. Bayer Leverkusen star Lars Bender is apparently a target of ours, with scouts sent to watch the club’s recent Champions League qualifier against Lazio, according to Italian publication Tuttomercatoweb.
Francis Coquelin is currently our only real option in the position, with Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta arguably no longer capable of performing the role. We can’t rely on the Frenchman to be fit and in form for the entirety of the campaign, so we really need to bring someone in before the window slams shut at the end of the month.
We have been heavily linked with Sevilla midfielder Grzegorz Krychowiak recently (via ESPN), but as of yet a move has failed to materialise. We have therefore seemingly turned our attention to Bundesliga ace Lars Bender, with the 26-year-old watched by our scouts.
He has been fantastic for the German side for years, and we have long been linked with a move for him. A fee in the region of £18m has been touted (via The Independent), but we may have to pay more to convince Leverkusen to sell so close to the end of the transfer window.

Bender may not be our top priority, and there are certainly players whom the fans would prefer to see join the club, but he’s still a top quality midfielder who would give us an excellent option alongside Santi Cazorla.
