Mesut Özil’s form has been superb since his return from injury, and the World Cup winner has now gone as far as to claim he could win the Ballon d’Or in the next few years.
Our record signing has come in for a huge amount of criticism since joining the club from Real Madrid, most of it rather unfair. He seems to be the top target for the media at the moment, and gets lambasted no matter how he performs.
He is clearly confident in his abilities however, and believes that he could soon be the recipient of the prestigious FIFA Ballon d’Or award.
“If I continue to develop well and stay healthy, I would like, in the next few years, to hold the Ballon d’Or in my hands,” Ozil is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
“I am convinced that it can happen. I’m feeling very positive.

“I’m a world champion and I play at a top club in the Premier League.
“There is much more of a physical test here than there is in Spain or in the Bundesliga – I constantly have bruises, but that makes me harder.
“I feel physically better than ever.”
Even if he does enough to deserve it in the next few years, it’s difficult to see the German star being handed the award.
His performances aren’t being recognised by the majority of football fans and pundits, and he has been criticised even after performing superbly.
Unless the media does a complete U-turn regarding their opinion of the playmaker, then it’s hard to see how he could even be considered for the Ballon d’Or.
Regardless of how delusional the idea may be, it’s great to see him so confident. Hopefully that confidence will transfer to the pitch, and he will continue to put in top class performances in an Arsenal shirt.
