Laurent Koscielny has nothing but good things to say about our newest signing Mohamed Elneny, recently highlighting just how important the Egyptian international has been since his arrival in January.
Speaking on Arsenal.com, the Frenchman revealed just how impressed he’d been with Elneny’s adaption to Arsenal and the Premier League since being signed from FC Basel.
The English top flight is obviously a massive step up when compared to the Swiss league, but so far the 23-year-old has proved an excellent acquisition. He’s quickly settled in to midfield alongside Francis Coquelin, and Koscielny knows just how key he’s been to our recent success.
“When he signed I could see he was a good player with the ball and how he could make good passes,” Koscielny said.
“He is not a player who takes the ball and goes from box to box with it, but he can help the team go higher up the pitch and keep the ball, which is very important.
“He doesn’t lose many balls during a game, he has scored and he has played well. He signed three months ago so his adaption to our philosophy at Arsenal and [to life] in England… I am very impressed with it.”

Elneny has certainly impressed recently, adding real balance to a midfield that has been struggling in the absence of Santi Cazorla. Arsene Wenger has tried a number of combinations in midfield, experimenting with Mathieu Flamini, Aaron Ramsey, and Mikel Arteta all struggling. They all failed to make the grade though, and only since Coquelin and Elneny began their partnership have we seen real success.
Arsenal transfer news
The duo share both the defensive and offensive work, making sure at least one is always protecting the back four. Elneny is incredibly adept at linking up play from deep in midfield, spreading play to the likes of Mesut Özil, Alex Iwobi, and Alexis Sanchez. Coquelin has also been stretching his legs offensively a little more, playing a part in both our opening goals against West Ham.
The partnership is certainly bearing fruit already, and hopefully both players continue to grow together and build an even stronger base for us to build on.
