Nacho Monreal has come on leaps and bounds since his arrival at the Emirates, but Arsene Wenger claims there are currently no negotiations regarding a new contract for the Spaniard, as reported by the Express.
Monreal struggled initially in the Premier League, and his performances were less than convincing. He has improved drastically however, and has deservedly usurped Kieran Gibbs as our first choice left-back.
He is likely to continue in this role, and should start the game against Crystal Palace this weekend. Despite his solid performances however, the manager insists talks are not ongoing over a contract extension.
“I’m happy with his performances but at the moment we are not in negotiations for a new contract,” Wenger said.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as while Monreal deserves his starting spot, we could still vastly improve on both our current left-backs. It’s not a problem position at the moment, but we could certainly look to bring in a new left-back in the near future.
As the report suggests, Monreal has been linked with a move back to Spain in recent months. We should only let him leave if we have a replacement ready and waiting, and that doesn’t seem like happening any time soon.
