Chuba Akpom has announced he is side-lined ‘for awhile’ due to a back injury. The return date is unknown but the striker isn’t expected back any time sooner and is set to miss a major part of this season.
After spending a season on loan at Hull City, Wenger granted the 21-year-old a first-team opportunity because of his brilliant display in pre-season.
Akpom has made a total of ten appearances for Arsenal since making his debut three years ago. The youngster started for the Gunners against Nottingham Forest in the EFL fixture, a game that ended in a 4-0 victory for the North London club.
Wenger hasn’t given him another run since then and the forward has confirmed his injury is a long-term setback through Instagram.
“Gutted to be out for a while with this back injury. Ill be back stronger,” the England Under-21 star revealed on the social media platform.
Arsene Wenger has opted for Alexis Sanchez up front and Theo Walcott out wide with Olivier Giroud and Lucas Perez as back-up. With plenty of options in attack it would be assumed the striker’s absence isn’t a major dent in the Gunners’ campaign.
However, the young talent is now a useful asset the Frenchman will not available to play in secondary tournaments such as the EFL Cup and that means more work and less rest for the primary strikers.
