Today’s award for bizarre Arsenal transfer rumour goes to the Daily Star, who claim that Arsene Wenger is looking to sign Watford’s powerhouse striker Troy Deeney.
It’s no secret that we’re badly in need of reinforcements in the forward department, and have been linked with every striker under the sun at one point or another. This link to Deeney is definitely one of the more questionable though, and it’s hard to imagine there being any truth in the rumour.
Wenger has regularly stressed that he is only in the market for top, top quality players, with the Frenchman only looking for talent that will seriously improve the squad. Deeney has been enjoying a decent season with newly promoted Watford – his partnership with Odion Ighalo certainly yielding results – but to say he’s top quality would just be ridiculous.
The Horns captain wouldn’t get anywhere near our starting XI, and would arguably struggle to even make the bench. That on top of the fact that the Daily Star are quoting an outrageous £20m price tag, makes this one totally impossible to imagine. Arsenal fans would also no doubt be furious with the lack of ambition shown were Wenger to sign Deeney, with Gooners world wide looking for a striker more the calibre of Karim Benzema, Robert Lewandowski, or Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.
Spending £20m on Troy Deeney would be akin to Liverpool splashing £35m on Andy Carroll, and Wenger surely has more sense than that. The former Walsall striker is a strong forward with good hold-up play, and he thrives in a two striker system where he isn’t relied upon to carry the responsibility of being the team’s main goalscorer on his shoulders. That just isn’t what we need, as not only do we not play with two strikers, we already have Olivier Giroud – arguably one of the best target-men around when it comes to hold-up and link-up play.
It would be more believable if we were being linked with his in-form strike partner Ighalo – who could surprisingly be battling for the golden boot come the end of the season – but even that would be a somewhat questionable move based on current form and form alone.
