With Arsenal being linked with the signing of Julian Draxler on a daily basis, it has to be said that some of the stories being put out there at the moment are total fantasy and in some cases, laughable. The latest load of drivel I’ve read from a National Newspaper is that Arsene Wenger intends to sign Draxler with the sole intention of turning him into the next RVP.
By this, I hear you ask, does Arsene mean that he is going to take one of the finest young midfield talents in Europe and turn him into a treacherous, money-grabbing tosspot, who spends more time on the treatment table than on the pitch? I don’t think so, I only jest…well… maybe.
Don’t get me wrong, I think Draxler is a fantastic young player, and it’s not even the idea that he could be turned into a striker that I find ridiculous, its the suggestion that AW perhaps called a certain newspaper reporter aside in a corridor at Colney and whispered in his shell-like (looking around first to make sure nobody was eves-dropping) –
- Vote: Who do you want Arsenal to draw in the Europa League?
- [Team news] Arsenal line up vs Benfica – Odegaard out and Partey fit
- Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote’s bid to takeover Arsenal ‘edging closer’
“Listen – I’ve got an idea – I’m going to sign Draxler in this window and – wait for it – I’m then going to turn him into a striker – yep, the next RVP! Keep that to yourself”
I’m not going to go into all the various reasons why this didn’t happen, mainly as I’m limited for space, but this is total bollocks.
To make the story even more juicy to us Gooners, they’ve now thrown in the added spice that the deal may depend on a move involving a (spit) Spurs player, Lewis Holtby. More bollocks.
Nobody seems to have taken into account that both Schalke 04 and the young man himself have said he is going nowhere before the summer and that he is trying to get himself included in the German world cup squad.
He is an attacking midfielder who is going to be fighting for his place in the German National squad against the likes of our own Ozil, Podolski and Gnabry, Marco Reus and the Bender boys among others. Why would he move to Arsenal at this stage where he will have to have a period of settling-in and adjustment and then have to fight for a first team place in a team that is seen as having the best array of attacking midfield talent in the EPL.
I’m not saying that this deal will never be done, I’m saying it will not be done in this transfer window. The latest on Draxler is that he has ruptured some ligaments that will keep him out of the game until at least March. We wish him a speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him in our beloved red and white next season.
