Arsenal are set to make a fresh move for Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier once the transfer window re opens in January, according to reports in Express.
The French international has been with current club Lyon for the entire duration of his burgeoning career to date, was heavily linked with a switch to the Gunners during the summer transfer window. However he opted to sign a new three-year deal at the Stade de Gerland.
The report suggests that the Gunners are still monitoring the 22 year old and may make a move in the winter transfer window. Lyon are still suffering from crippling financial woes and a number of their stars may have to leave and Arsene Wenger may try to take advantage of the situation to prise Grenier away from Lyon.
The 22 year old admitted recently that, although his contract runs until 2016, he may leave Lyon soon. He said:
I have a contract which now runs until 2016. We’ll see what happens here in a year. Anyway, I told the President that whatever happens, I will not leave my club for free.
Clement Grenier was born in the town of Annonay which is a short distance from one of southern France’s major cities Lyon. While playing for FC Annonay in their under-9 side, a Lyon scout saw him and was eventually inducted into the club’s youth academy in 2002. He attracted much attention from clubs from Italy and England during his early career as he featured in a number of pre-season matches in the 2008-09 season though he mainly played for the Reserves side in the fourth tier of French football.
He made his senior debut in 2009-10 season but didn’t get much playing that and received his break through in 2010-11 as he made 23 appearances and 32 in the 2012-13 season. Last term was been at Lyon scoring seven goals and notching up nine assists. He can be either be deployed on the right hand side of the midfield or behind the striker as an attacking midfielder or purely as a second striker and has an eye for goal. He is comfortable in and around the box and can shoot with either foot.
Arsenal’s interest in him will come as a surprise for some Gunners fans, given the wealth of in form attacking midfield talent that Wenger currently has at his disposal. The team already have the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Tomas Rosicky along with Jack Wilshere and Mesut Ozil who are all competing for places, so we don’t need another player in that position and the money would be better spent if we go for a striker or defensive midfielder.
