Arsenal and Liverpool are among the top clubs reported to be interested in signing highly rated Hoffenheim winger Kevin Volland, according to reports in Sunday Mirror.
The 21 year old is widely regarded as an up-and-coming star following a series of scintillating performances in the Bundesliga, and has an outside chance of making it to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
The report states that Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have been alerted to his ability, and Tottenham have been on his case for months. However the bad news for the top-flight outfits is that Bayern Munich joined the queue last week.
A Premier League switch has been mooted in January, in light of the widespread interest in Volland’s signature, despite the fact he is under contract at the Rhein-Neckar Arena until 2017. He made 30 appearances for Hoffenheim last term, and is reportedly valued by manager Markus Gisdol at £12 million.
Volland joined 1860 Munich as a fifteen year old in 2007 and spent four years learning his trade in the club’s academy, but it was not long before he was touted as one of the best German players in his age group. This was shown by his rise through the German youth teams, scoring a total of 12 goals in 22 total appearances for the Germany Under-17′s, 18′s and 19′s. After scoring four goals in five appearances for 1860 Munich’s reserves, he was soon promoted to the first team.
It was in his second season at 1860 Munich were his talent became apparent as he started 33 games for Die Lowen, in which he scored 14 goals. The forward left for Hoffenheim at the end of the 2011-12 season, having developed enormously during his two-year stint as a professional there. Many suspected he would struggle to gain a place in the first-team but he emerged as one of the few positives in a dismal campaign for the club. He made 30 appearances last season, scoring 13 goals.

His versatility along the front line has seen him appear in a variety of positions, but he has been played most often just behind the striker and his tricky style of play sees him win a number of fouls. His assist record implies that he is a good crosser of the ball, with him being one of Hoffenheim’s main creative forces. Another one of his key attributes is his ability to put in a through ball. He is also quite the dribbler, always keen to take the game to his opponents and has great vision.
The Gunners will face tough competition from other Premier League clubs but Volland may be more tempted to move to the Emirates, with German players Per Mertesacker, Mesut Ozil, Lukas Podolski and Serge Gnabry already shining in North London. He will be an excellent addition as it would reduce the burden on Giroud and we will also get a goal scoring winger. He will also be available for the Champions League as he is not cup tied.
