Arsenal are reportedly set to rival Liverpool for £11 million rated Schalke defender Kyriakos Papadopoulos, according to reports in Express.
The 21 year old Greek international has been linked with a move away from Schalke and the North London side are said to be keen on landing the Bundesliga man as Wenger looks to strengthen his defensive options.
Papadopoulos was heavily linked with a move to Liverpool during the summer transfer window, with some reports suggesting that a deal had already been agreed subject to a medical as the 21-year-old recovered from a serious knee injury. However a move failed to materialize.
It’s not clear whether Brendan Rodgers side will launch a bid of their own during the transfer window. The Reds have already signed PSG’s Mamdou Sakho and Sporting Lisbon’s Tiago Ilori, Rodgers may decide that he now has sufficient strength in depth at center back.
The Report claims that the north London outfit are set to steal a march on their rivals to land the Greek stopper, with Schalke seemingly willing to sell. The German club are prepared to let Papadopoulos leave if they receive an acceptable offer for the Greek international.
Papadopoulos is not short of potential suitors with a host of top European clubs interested. But it’s Arsenal who head the queue, with Wenger willing to meet his £11 million asking price, a fee which Liverpool have so far been reluctant to match.

The Greek international was first brought on to the scene when Olympiacos signed him from his hometown side in Greece, and was quickly included in the first team. At just 15 years of age Papadopoulos became the youngest player ever to play in the Greek League. He was then signed by Bundesliga side Schalke on a long time contract.
He has remarkable positional sense for someone who has only just turned 21, and his impeccable timing and decision making abilities are two substantial reasons why he is so highly sought after. He has good body strength which makes him a dominant force at the back. Every player has his flaws and Papadopoulos is no different. Sometimes he has been left chasing the shadows of quick and pacey forwards and this has often led him to commit silly fouls, but he has time on his side to improve on this aspects.
Arsenal are a little short in central defense with constant injuries concerns which have led to Bacary Sagna being used as a center back, a role that the Frenchman has filled in with ease, although Wenger is clearly still keen on bringing in alternatives. Even though the Gunners are OK at the moment but we can’t expect them to go the full length of the season with out any additions. Kyriakos Papadopoulos would be a welcome signing and will definitely be an exciting addition to the squad if the North London club do manage to sign him.
