We’ve gotten off to a stuttering start this season, and injuries certainly haven’t helped. Arsene Wenger may see his hand forced in several areas of the team, but has a few choices to make ahead of our clash with Newcastle this weekend.
Here is how we think Arsenal will line up at St James’ Park:
GK) Petr Cech
The hero against Liverpool, Cech is already helping us to forget about his poor showing against West Ham during the season opener. Hopefully he won’t be needed nearly as much against Newcastle, but if he is then at least we know he’s up to the task.
RB) Hector Bellerin
- Arsenal told ‘no less than £50m’ for top defensive transfer target
- Arsenal keen to sign 16th best ranked Premier League stopper
- Arsenal keeping tabs on €40m Italy star after ‘outstanding’ season
The Spaniard has been phenomenal for quite some time now, and deserves his starting spot in the team. We look a far better side with Bellerin at right-back, and he should keep his place this weekend.
LB) Nacho Monreal
Just like Bellerin, his compatriot Monreal has wrestled a starting spot away from his fellow full-back. He has been one of our more reliable performers, even if he’s not the most exciting.
The Brazilian was made to look distinctly average due to Calum Chambers’ poor performance alongside him against Liverpool, but showed glimpses of real quality. He looks to have a bright future at the club, and will be looking to make the most of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker’s absences (via Arsenal.com).
CB) Calum Chambers
After his disaster against Liverpool, Chambers shouldn’t really be anywhere near the first team. Many would have him replaced by make-shift centre-backs Nacho Monreal or Mathieu Debuchy, but Arsene Wenger usually prefers to nurture and protect his young talent.
