Arsenal v Southampton
Barclays Premier League
Kick off: November 23, 2013 3:15 PM BST
If someone told me at this point in the season that Arsenal v Southampton would be 1st against 3rd, I would have been sceptical at best. But with both teams showing excellent form in the early stages of the season, that’s what we were in for.
Both teams had been strong defensively, so this was likely to be a game of fine margins. With an early goal perhaps opening it up a little.
- Arsenal keeping tabs on €40m Italy star after ‘outstanding’ season
- Where Arsenal would have finished in the league without VAR
- Arsenal’s top Hector Bellerin replacement is now available for £30m
Southampton started off pressing aggressively, which has been a feature of their game this season. But when Arsenal were on the ball they looked far more dangerous.
Wilshere did well when he received the ball in the box, carrying it past two defenders before dinking it over the Southampton keeper from an awkward angle. The ball hit the far post and fell straight back into the arms of Boruc.
Ramsey hit the post for the second time in the opening 20 minutes, back heeling a great ball into the box from Özil. The ball unluckily went out for a goal kick, with Giroud waiting to pounce on a rebound.
The Frenchman got his chance shortly after though, when Artur Boruc dawdled on the ball and attempted to turn away from the Arsenal striker not once, but twice. Giroud dispossessed him and slotted he ball into the open net. 1-0 Arsenal.
Arsenal’s tempo dipped a bit after the goal, Southampton seeing much more of the possession and looking threatening from set pieces.
A higher tempo is needed from Arsenal in the second half, because I can’t see 1-0 being enough to see off a strong Southampton side.
