Petr Cech recently completed his controversial switch across London (via the BBC), but Arsene Wenger tried to bring Chelsea’s other shot-stopper Thibaut Courtois to Arsenal before casing the Czech international, according to the Daily Star.
The Belgian keeper has been on Chelsea’s books for years, but he only broke into the team last season. Before then he spent time on loan in Spain, helping Atletico Madrid to the La Liga title.
He had previously caught the eye of Arsene Wenger though, with the Star claiming that the Frenchman attempted to take Courtois on loan back in 2013. The report goes on to say Jose Mourinho blocked the move however, with the Portuguese manager refusing to strengthen a rival.
Two years later and things seem to have changed, with Mourinho having to watch Cech make the move to the Emirates.
It’s unlikely that us having Courtois on loan for a season would have changed the trajectory of his career a huge amount, but I for one am glad we didn’t further the development of the young keeper before handing him back to Mourinho.
