Mario Gotze has been repeatedly linked with a move to Liverpool, but we’re apparently looking to steal him away by matching their £31m bid, according to German publication TZ (via The Independent).
The 23-year-old has been billed as one of the most promising young attacking midfielders ever since he broke onto the scene with Borussia Dortmund, but he’s struggled to make the impact many thought he would since his move to Bayern Munich.
Gotze got the game winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, and it seemed as though he might overcome his issues at Bayern. He’s been a bit-part player under current boss Pep Guardiola though, and the report suggests that when Carlo Ancelotti takes over this summer the playmaker will be nothing more than a spare part.
The fact that he has history with current Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could obviously sway him into choosing an Anfield switch, but if he wants to continue playing in the Champions League then he has to choose Arsenal.
While Gotze is a supremely talented individual, you’d argue that he isn’t what we really need. He’s a typical Arsenal player, small, technically gifted, but arguably lacking the physical attributes required to thrive in the Premier League.
Arsenal fans would be furious if Arsene Wenger splashed the cash on another attacking midfielder when what we really need is a striker, a centre-back, and probably a central midfielder.

Wenger never signs a player for the sake of it, as we saw when he turned down the chance to re-sign Cesc Fabregas due to the presence of Mesut Özil – instead allowing the Spaniard to join Chelsea.

That said though, when a quality player becomes available you often need to snap at the chance to sign them, as those opportunities don’t come along all that often. We’ve needed a player like Luis Suarez, Karim Benzema, or Robert Lewandowski for years, but they’ve seemingly never been available. It appears as though Gotze will be on sale this summer, and even if he’s not exactly what we need he would definitely add something to our side.
