We all know Robbie Savage talks a huge amount of rubbish, but his most recent ramblings actually make some sense, with the player turned pundit suggesting Arsenal are Manchester City’s biggest rivals for the Premier League title after our dominant victory over Manchester United last weekend.
The way the BT Sport pundit came to this conclusion was a little bizarre – as he claims we have now overtaken his former title favourites Manchester United in the race – but he’s got the right idea all the same.
Louis van Gaal’s side have so far shown nothing to suggest they are title favourites. They miraculously found themselves top of the table a week ago, and put a string of results together despite not actually playing all that well. They were badly found out when they came to the Emirates however, as we put them to the sword after romping to a 3-0 lead in the first 20 minutes.
They haven’t actually come up against a huge amount of competition so far this season, and have struggled whenever facing anyone of quality.
Savage claims he originally tipped United for the title, but now believes Manchester City are the favourites – with Arsenal their closest rivals. He also believes our Champions League failures could be a blessing in disguise, and if we crash out of Europe altogether, our domestic season could get the shot in the arm it needs.
“I tipped Manchester United to win the league, I thought they were going to make some marquee signings,” Savage told BBC Radio Manchester (via the Daily Star)

“But do I think Manchester United will win the league now? Manchester City’s biggest rivals are Arsenal.
“I don’t think Arsenal will qualify for the Champions League group stages and that could help them in the league.
“I think United will finish third. With the season and Chelsea are having, I think it’s there to be won.”
We’ve shown over the last ten or more months that we are more than capable of challenging for the Premier League title, but it’s time to show that we can get the results over the course of the season when it really counts.

Currently just two points off top spot, we need to make sure we replicate the form we showed against Manchester United throughout the campaign.
