Arsene Wenger appears to be keen on further strengthening our British core, with the Frenchman looking to bring Charlton Athletic defender Joe Gomez to the Emirates this summer, according to the Mirror.
The report suggests that we are leading the race for his signature, despite Manchester City and Manchester United also keen on bringing him to the Premier League.
The English defender has been superb for Charlton this season, and has also impressed for England’s Under-19s. He looks to have a promising future ahead of him, and the Championship side may struggle to hold onto him this summer.
The Mirror claim they are asking a fee of £8m for the versatile defender, and despite being just 17-years-old, that figure is unsurprising considering the premium that comes with English players.
He can play at centre-back or right-back, two positions we don’t really need to strengthen at the moment. We have a plethora of options on the right, with Hector Bellerin and Mathieu Debuchy battling it out for a starting spot, and Carl Jenkinson potentially returning next season. Calum Chambers doesn’t look to have a future there, but he is a bright prospect at centre-back.
