Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil dropped a significant hint regarding which manager could replace Arsene Wenger when he eventually retires after revealing that Jurgen Klopp is a hot topic within the Emirates Stadium dressing room, Bild reports.
Klopp left Borussia Dortmund this summer after an emotional seven-year stay and despite indicating that he was ready to walk into another job, he has since revealed that he’s set to take a sabbatical (via The Guardian).
Wenger still has two years left on his current deal and looks as determined as ever to reposition the club at the top of the game domestically, but Klopp has been mooted as an eventual successor (via the Metro).
Arsenal transfer news
“He is a huge topic – in the newspapers and with the players as well,” Ozil was quoted as saying.
“Some colleagues asked me about what Klopp is like.
- Arsenal told ‘no less than £50m’ for top defensive transfer target
- Arsenal keen to sign 16th best ranked Premier League stopper
- Arsenal keeping tabs on €40m Italy star after ‘outstanding’ season
“I never had him as a coach myself, but his success speaks for itself. Klopp has a great personality. I like how he approaches everything very relaxed even though he is a great professional.”
Wenger and Klopp have endured similar fortunes over the past few years; competing against rivals with unlimited resources while upholding an attractive footballing philosophy.
Klopp is also a huge admirer of Wenger, referring to the boss as “Sir Arsene Wenger” (via ESPN) and our regular meetings with Borussia Dortmund over the past few years in the Champions League has only strengthened their relationship.
Given the foundations Wenger has laid at the club, a manager with Klopp’s credentials will certainly be a favourite to continue our journey when the position eventually becomes vacant.
