In a major piece of news from Portugal, Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho has put Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United on alert by expressing his desire to play in the Premier League.
The 22-year-old attracted interest from a host of top European clubs during the summer. Several clubs including Arsenal reportedly wanted to bid for the services of the player but the asking price put them off and it was even suggested last month that Carvalho was close to signing a new contract at Sporting.
However he refused to confirm entering negotiations with Sporting over extending his stay at Estadio Jose Alvalade and insisted his long-term aspiration is to play in England or Spain.
We all have ambitions and I hope one day to play in the best leagues in the world, the English or Spanish. It was not this year, but if I continue to do my job as I have done so, it will certainly come sooner or later.
Carvalho is contracted at Sporting until 2018, but it is understood he has a £37m buyout clause inserted into that deal. This, along with his own comments, will certainly be a great boost for English clubs, and we can expect Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United to compete for this player’s signature over the next few months.
