Last week Arsene Wenger hinted to the press, “I hope we have something to tell you Monday”.
Speculation was rife – Could it be the signing of Draxler? Griezmann? Costa? Martinez, Morata? Mandzukic, or any of the several dozen other players that have been linked to Arsenal during this transfer window?
In the end the big surprise was that Arsenal had agreed a £150m sponsorship deal with Puma over the next 3 years. Great news, but hardly a surprise, as it had been touted around for months. I remember seeing pictures of mock-ups of Arsenal Puma kit doing the rounds during last summer.
Now Arsene has again told Journalists, as quoted in the Daily Star:
I hope we have something to tell you [on signings by Friday].
One can only guess as to what it is. My guess is that Wenger will announce that he has signed a new 3 year contract, or maybe that Mertesacker and Rosisky have signed contract extensions. One that I’d be delighted to read myself, is that Sagna has signed a new 3 year deal!
I would love to see Arsenal making a new signing before Friday, but I believe that if Wenger does sign someone, it’ll come completely out of left field and probably be someone not mentioned in the press to date (ala Ozil).

Time is getting short and the bloggers are getting desperate these days and are even trotting out the old stories linking us with Yoann Gourcuff. It appears to me that we have been linked to this player since Arsenal was known as Dial Square. But let’s be honest, if Wenger was really interested in this player he would have signed him up years ago.
Of the players named above, I think that any of them who are playing for teams still involved in the Champions League will stay where they are until at least the summer. Morata and Griezmann have stated previously that they are happy where they are (for now).
Mandzukic, according to ‘The Score’, has been dropped from the Bayern Munich’s first team for “Poor Training” and The Score have quoted Bayern’s director of sport, Matthias Sammer, as saying:
He hasn’t been training as we know he can, he needs to step on the gas again.
Mandzukic found himself surplus to requirements in Friday’s 2-0 win at Borussia Moenchengladbach and didn’t even make the bench. In his absence, former Arsenal target, Mario Goetze was moved up from midfield as the lone striker and scored Bayern’s first goal in an impressive display.
One interesting player who has been named as available by his club is Lyon midfielder Clément Grenier. The Guardian has reported that Newcastle United have made a “substantial” offer for the player, who they see as a direct replacement for PSG bound Yoann Cabaye.
Wenger has said previously that he is an admirer of Grenier and it is understood that Arsenal made a bid for him during the summer. Now that he has been made available by his club, Arsenal may just lodge a bid for him.
I think that Costa is one for the Summer and I would love to see Arsenal to sign him, as he is a fantastic all-round striker.
With regard to Draxler, I think that Arsenal may reach an agreement for the player with Schalke now, but because of Schalke’s ongoing involvement in the CL and the player’s desire to represent his country in the World Cup, I think that the move won’t actually happen until the summer.
What do you think?
