I have to admit I am an AKB fan. I have always been for various reasons. He is someone that gave Sir Alex Ferguson sleepless nights, the one who discovered numerous talents, who turned his back on lucrative contracts from Real Madrid despite their many advances to stay with the sinking ship that was Arsenal at the time and steadied it while making sure we stayed competitive in all competitions…the list is endless.
Despite all this, he will be loved and hated in equal measure and he is fine with the criticisms as he has shown in the past. From a team that had become a feeder club for others while going for a long spell without winning any ‘proper trophies’, Arsenal has now won back to back FA Cups making it the most successful club in the history of the illustrious domestic trophy. This has largely gone unnoticed.
I do not want to get into the argument of whether Arsene Wenger should have bought or not during this transfer window. I will say though that Wenger has been doubted in the past and always relishes the opportunity to prove his doubters wrong. The one that sticks out like a sore thumb is when he claimed that his team could go a whole season unbeaten. This claim was rubbished and he was called comical in some quarters.
Not only did he prove them wrong but the Invincibles played some of the most scintillating football along the way. It is amazing that someone like Thierry Henry who experienced Wenger’s methods first hand and owed his career to can actually be critical of Arsene’s methods. All criticisms are valid and while Henry is allowed to voice his opinion, he should take a long hard look at his and Wenger’s achievements and back his former manager.
As an AKB supporter, I have to admit sometimes there is confusion caused by Wenger’s actions (or in the case of this transfer window, lack of it), but the Frenchman has always backed his decisions with results. It is only a matter of time before he does it again.
