The transfer window officially opened on July 1st but that was some six weeks after the last league games were played in the Premier League. Plenty of time for Arsene to take holidays you would think, and enquire about players he would like to sign to increase the number and especially, the quality of the existing squad. Given that many players left Arsenal in the last month or so, the need to bring in top class replacements is particularly important if we are to challenge for honours this coming season.
Fans were encouraged when Ivan Gazidis publicly announced that Arsenal would be able to compete with the top clubs in the world when it came to acquiring new players. The club would be able to afford to pay a player like Wayne Rooney with wages of £250,000 per week and according to the media, Arsene apparently has around £70 million at his disposal to spend on new players.
Well, Arsenal fans, having been starved of success for eight years, we’re naturally really excited to hear such official public statements being made and rightly or wrongly, expected Arsene to make some significant signings as soon as the transfer window opened! To their credit, Arsenal have made several offers to buy Luis Suarez from Liverpool but have been told he is not for sale. Apparently, that has not put Arsene off and he is now going to wait and see what happens. Who else have Arsenal signed? Well, a free transfer acquisition of Yannick Sanogo, a French Under 21 player with lots of potential is the only new player to arrive at the Emirates thus far!
For a squad so short of bench quality and in desperate need for a defensive midfielder, a centre back, a striker and possibly a experienced goalkeeper, why has nothing else happened to acquire these new players? Remembering what happened last year when Arsene waited until the LAST day of the transfer window before signing players, are fans going to watch all the other teams get their players in and their squads settled before the season starts? Are Arsenal going to sit back and either refuse to pay the going rate for quality players or insist that the existing set of players will be sufficient to do the job?

Arsenal fans deserve better than to be treated to the same set of empty promises every year while they have to pay the highest ticket prices in the Premier League! Arsenal need to reinforce the squad and must do so with world class players! Yes, we know it’s difficult to sign these type of players but Manchester City have already signed four very good players for £98 million and maybe haven’t finished yet! Chelsea have signed three new players for £29 million and acquired Schwarzer, an experienced goalkeeper Arsenal were supposedly interested in signing last year, on a free transfer! Six other players have been added to their squad, having been acquired for undisclosed fees or are players returning from loan spells. Manchester United, under new manager David Moyes, have only signed one player for just under £2 million and are reportedly trying to sign Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona.
What is it about Arsenal that they persistence in delaying signings every year until the last few days of the transfer window while other clubs set about their business early after the season finishes? Is it because Arsene will not pay what the market values of players are? One only has to think back to our attempts to sign Juan Mata in 2011 when Arsene refused to pay the extra £2 or £3 million and Chelsea stepped in and signed him! What a miss that was! The extra money would have improved our team significantly but instead Mata helped Chelsea win the Champions League!
That was poor, poor decision making and a philosophy that just has to change if we are actually going to improve our team. Spend money and win things and the money will follow. You win nothing with second rate players. We have eight years proof of that! Arsene, spend the money or leave and let someone else have a chance to win trophies once again…..something the Arsenal fans want and, deserve!
The season starts in three weeks and unless Arsenal, and Arsene, in particular, get their proverbial fingers out, and actually do something quickly, another disappointing season could be on the horizon!
