Arsene Wenger has joked that Arsenal might be more successful in the Europa League following our Champions League last-16 exit at the hands of Monaco.

Our 2-0 win wasn’t enough with away goals once again counting against us and knocking us out for the fifth straight year at this stage of Europe’s elite competition.
And following the defeat, the Arsenal boss kidded his team might be better off in the Europa League.
Asked if he was unhappy at repeated exits in the round of 16, Wenger said: “Yes, but sometimes we have been beaten by opponents who were in the final,” reports the Daily Mail.
“Perhaps it would be better not to go out like this and make the Europa League, we would be more likely to win.”
Of course, it’s a joke but that hasn’t stopped some parts of the media taking him at face value for the sake of sensationalism.

Wenger is saying if the objective is just to win everything, why don’t Arsenal enter the Europea League and forego the challenge of the Champions League just for the sake of winning a trophy.
But given the poor performance of English clubs in Europe during this and recent seasons this might become a reality for some in the near future with the UEFA co-efficient of England continuing to dwindle.
If the English representation in the competition continue to fall at the first hurdle, the country might not retain its customary four places in Europe’s top competition and who knows what devastating impact that could have.
