Arsene Wenger has reportedly had a personal conversation with Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia to express his interest and Italian giants AC Milan and Inter Milan are subsequently looking at other targets, Sky Italia’s Gianluca Di Marzio reports.
Kondogbia has been one of the names repeatedly linked with us over the past few weeks as a potential defensive midfielder to provide competition for Francis Coquelin in the heart of our midfield.
In fact, there have even been suggestions that we launched a £18.2million bid earlier on this month (via The Telegraph), but those reports have since cooled.
According to Di Marzio, talks have reopened between Wenger and Kondogbia which suggests that an agreement with the club has already – or is close – to being reached.
The former Seville man completely dominated the game at the Emirates Stadium as we fell 3-1 behind in our Champions League last-16 tie against Monaco in February. It could be that performance which convinced Wenger that Kondogbia was ready for a big move.

He would certainly add some much-needed steel to our squad. The French powerhouse is a more box-to-box player which allows us the flexibility to partner him with Coquelin while also starting him alongside some of our more creative talents.
If the boss can get this deal over the line then we’ll have serious strength in depth in our midfield department.
