Arsene Wenger has been told that he will have to pay £25 million for defender Jonny Evans. The Northern Irishman moved to West Brom last summer for a fee of around £6 million but now his club want almost four times that for the centre back (via The Daily Mail).
Another day, another setback in Arsenal’s search for a central defender. Today it is Jonny Evans’ turn to have his name crossed off the list of targets following his club’s ludicrous valuation. West Bromwich Albion have reportedly told The Gunners they want a fee of £25 million for the centre back – four times more than they paid Manchester United for his services last summer.
The first choice target for Arsene Wenger still seems to be Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi but we broke the news yesterday that his club want upwards of £50 million for the German. Jonny Evans was seen as the cheaper option so these reports of a £25 million price tag won’t go down well with Gunners fans.
Arsenal’s search for a centre back is no secret and it seems to have put other clubs in a position of power. West Brom manager Tony Pulis knows that The Gunners need a centre back and can really charge the club whatever he likes with just over a week left in the transfer window. Let’s hope Wenger and the board can get something done in time.
