Arsene Wenger has said he plans to sit down for discussions with Jack Wilshere over a new contract at Arsenal in the New Year. The midfielder is on loan at Arsenal’s weekend opponents, AFC Bournemouth, but has just 18 months left on his current deal at the Emirates (via Arsenal.com).
It’s one of the most interesting career paths of any Arsenal player in recent years. Jack Wilshere went from boy wonder to injury-prone to Bournemouth player in just a few years but Arsene Wenger seems convinced that his future still lies at Arsenal. The Gunners boss confirmed that he wants to open contract negotiations with the 24-year-old sometime in the New Year.
“Yeah, of course,” Wenger replied in his pre-match press conference when asked about a deal for Wilshere. “Not before the Bournemouth game, no. We have to plan that around the New Year.”
Wilshere left the Emirates for the South Coast on Deadline Day and Arsene Wenger is pleased with how the midfielder has settled at Bournemouth.
“I’m happy that he develops well, it was a good decision for him to go to Bournemouth because he gets regular football.
“From the observations we get he’s getting stronger every week. He needs regular football, maybe not every three days but every week at the start and that’s helped him a lot to develop and come back to the level where he deserves to be.

“I leave him to deal with his manager. Overall, I ask how he played and read the reports and when I can watch highlights I do. For the rest, I’m happy that he’s had no injuries since he left us.”
Wenger was then asked what he made of Wilshere’s comments that he wants Bournemouth to win the match at the Emirates.
“That’s normal,” he said. “When you sign for a club you’re committed to do well for a season. You cannot say you want your own club to lose the game.”
Wilshere’s performances for the Cherries have certainly improved in recent weeks. The midfielder’s passing and ability to drive the ball forward from midfield is clearly on display and he already looks fitter than he has in years. Hopefully, Wilshere will get that new contract and play a massive part for Arsenal in the future because on current form, he’d be an important player.
