Despite Gabriel Paulista closing in on an Arsenal transfer from Villarreal, Arsene Wenger is still keen on bringing another defender to the Emirates this January, according to talkSPORT.
Daniele Rugani has been lighting up Serie A this season, with his performances for Empoli earning him high praise in Italy.
Wenger has been keeping tabs on the 20-year-old, and reportedly believes now is the time to snap him up.
Real Madrid are also interested in prising the young defender away, but there are complications. Rugani is currently co-owned by Juventus, and any sale would have to be agreed by both parties.

The talented star’s performances have recently earned him a call up to the Italian national team, after a number of appearances across several youth levels. He looks to be a fantastic prospect for the future, and seems exactly the kind of player Wenger would be keen on.
It’s difficult to see the Frenchman investing in another defender at this point however, despite the lengthy injury to Mathieu Debuchy.
