According to widespread reports, including the reputable Sky Sports, Barcelona have launched a bid for Arsenal’s captain Thomas Vermaelen believed to be in the region of £10million.
The Gunners centre half has been heavily linked with a move away this summer due to his lack of regular action throughout a season that was decimated by injuries and time on the bench.
Manchester United have expressed their interest all summer, with reports emerging the Premier League outfit had launched a £10million a couple of weeks ago. However with Arsene Wenger reluctant to sell to a rival, Barcelona have swooped in with a similar bid to test the Frenchman’s resolve.
It is thought the Arsenal boss is holding out for closer to £15million for the 28-year-old who has one more year on his current terms. However if he can manage to sell abroad than to a rival then it will be worth accepting the lower bid should the Catalan club be unwilling to negotiate a higher bid.
Wenger revealed that he could not confirm Vermaelen would be staying on this season, which basically means he’s gone. Unfortunately his squad situation will not change at Arsenal, and if he will have the opportunity to become a regular in Spain for a massive club like Barcelona then a move seems inevitable. And fair enough to him too.

Although it will be a loss to lose our captain, it is time he perhaps moves on (not to a rival club in England) and we can look to bring in an experienced replacement. Would love Mat Hummels, but maybe that is a little hopeful. But who knew we would have spent so much money all ready this season? Maybe Wenger can surprise us one more time.
