Barcelona star Arda Turan has taken a bit of a dig at Arsenal, suggesting that he was far too good to be playing at the Emirates, as reported by FourFourTwo.
The Turkish international made the switch from Atletico Madrid to Barcelona last summer, but due to their transfer ban was unable to make his debut until 2016.
Despite only making the switch to Barcelona this season, Turan was recently linked with a move to Arsenal (via the Metro). He was touted as potentially being part of a multiple player exchange for Mesut Özil, which honestly is a ridiculous notion.
He has spoken about the links to Arsenal though, and got a bit of subtle criticism in as he did so.
“Honestly, I thought: ‘If I play very well [I could] end up signing for Barca, because my style fits this team. If I [only] play well, I go to Arsenal,” he told Catalan newspaper Diari Ara (via FourFourTwo).
“For my style, with the ball, playing easy, short, aggressive when needed, I knew I could get here to Barcelona.”

Very few fans are delusional enough to think Arsenal are better than Barcelona, and what Turan has said obviously isn’t wrong. Barcelona are going to chase the world’s best players, and while that’s something Arsenal aspires to, we’ve lost out on a number of big targets over the years.
That said though, it’s still totally unnecessary to blast another club the way Turan did. There is a certain etiquette when it comes to football nowadays, and the 29-year-old seems to have completely ignored that.
Talking up your own club is expected and obviously Turan is going to discuss how his own fantastic form earned him a move to one of the biggest clubs in the world. But why is it necessary to talk about how if you weren’t as good then you’d be playing for another team? The simple answer is it’s not, and it just makes you seem petty.
Arsenal transfer news
In all honesty a huge number of Arsenal fans wouldn’t even want Turan at the club, especially if it were at the expense of Mesut Özil.
