Arsenal great and legend Dennis Bergkamp believes that Arsenal require a true striker despite the goal-scoring prowess of Dutchman Robin van Persie.
The former frontman suggests that Van Persie would benefit more playing off a true striker much like Bergkamp himself did behind another Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.
Berkamp said to the Daily Mail on the situation:
When I look at Robin van Persie, he is the front player, but he is better in my old position. They are missing an out-and-out goalscorer.
Now they play with an extra midfielder instead [of two strikers, as was the case in Bergkamp’s day]. The midfielders are all the same sort of players. You need one who wants to get in behind Van Persie.
I would have to agree with Bergkamp. To often Van Persie has looked very much isolated in his role upfront and would probably be more effective with a midfielder/striker playing in a more advanced forward position. But with our inability to dominate midfield thus far, there is a huge chance that doing this may further compromise defence which has been relatively suspect of late. What do you guys think should happen?
