It is interesting the amount of praise Jose Mourinho and his Chelsea team are getting for shutting out Liverpool. They parked the bus and let Liverpool have all the possession and still won the game 2-0. What a travesty. Boring, Anti-football wins the game again and blows the title race wide open. Any coach can be tactical and set his team up to defend.
The last time Arsenal played such a game was in the 2004/2005 FA cup final against Manchester United. Unbelievably we managed to keep United at bay for 120 minutes while barely attempting a shot on goal and still triumphed on penalties. Arsenal fans could not believe what they had witnessed. After all, this was Arsene Wenger, the coach that likes to play attacking free flowing football resorting to such negative tactics. We might have lifted the trophy but the Arsenal fans were up in arms. Wenger said his hands were tied as he had to contend with too many injuries for the game.
In 2005/2006, on our way to the Champions League final we played against Villarreal. We won the first leg playing our usual swashbuckling football but the second leg was a different matter altogether. We defended from the beginning to the end and when Villarreal got a penalty at the end, it looked like curtains for us before Jens Lehmann stepped up and saved it and in the process spared our blushes. Again we triumphed playing the same type of football Mourinho has perfected and ended up with a mouthwatering clash against Barcelona that we lost playing attacking football.
One manager who is as tactically astute as Mourinho is Diego Simeone. Mourinho might just have met his match. I hope Simeone can win Chelsea at Stamford Bridge because no one wants to watch a repeat of the performance Chelsea produced against Liverpool in a Champions League final. At least Atletico Madrid play good football that is easy on the eye.
If Chelsea goes through, the team I would prefer them to play is Bayern Munich. Pep Guardiola knows how to play against Mourinho and his possession football is perfectly suited to counter Mourinho and he has better players at his disposal than Liverpool to punish Chelsea. Mourinho may be good at defending but he has no idea how to set his teams out to attack.
